John Mitchell Joins Rapid City Rush as Assistant Coach

2025 NAHL Coach of the Year brings a winning pedigree to the ECHL affiliate

The ECHL’s Rapid City Rush announced this week that John Mitchell has been appointed to the role of Assistant Coach, bringing a distinguished coaching résumé to the franchise.

A Proven Track Record

Mitchell spent the past two seasons at the helm of the Wisconsin Windigo in the North American Hockey League, guiding the club to the Robertson Cup Playoffs in both years and capturing a Central Division championship in 2025. His leadership helped the team post winning records in three of the last four seasons across the NAHL and NA3HL.

From the Ice to the Bench

Before turning to coaching, Mitchell enjoyed a five‑year professional playing career that included 225 games in the ECHL and the AHL, as well as 193 games in the American Hockey League. He capped his collegiate career at the University of Wisconsin, where he helped the Badgers reach the national championship game in 2010.

Award‑Winning Coaching

The 39‑year‑old was honored as NAHL Coach of the Year in 2025, a testament to his ability to maximize talent and develop a competitive edge. His stint with the St. Cloud Norsemen, where he served as associate coach during the 2023‑24 season, further honed his strategic acumen.

What This Means for the Rush

Rapid City’s management expressed confidence that Mitchell’s winning pedigree will translate into on‑ice success for the Rush. General manager Peter Drikos noted that the new assistant coach “adds depth to our staff and brings a championship mindset that aligns with the club’s ambitions.” The organization looks forward to integrating his experience into player development and game planning as the season progresses.
