Scholarship honors academic excellence
The 2025‑26 season has brought a distinct accolade to the Canisius hockey program, as eleven of its student‑athletes were selected among the AHCA/Krampade All‑American Scholars. The honor, administered by the American Hockey Coaches Association, celebrates those who maintain a minimum 3.75 grade point average each semester while competing in at least 40 percent of their team’s games.
Among the honorees, seniors Hunter Andrew and Kash Rasmussen earned the distinction for the third time in their careers, underscoring sustained scholarly performance alongside athletic commitment. Sophomores Carter Patterson and Hunter Price joined them with a second‑time recognition, reflecting a trajectory of academic growth. The first‑time recipients — junior Trey Funk, Ethan Robertson, and sophomores Luke Marshall, Petter Wickström Stumer, as well as freshmen FJ Buteau, Cole Miller and Kyan Haldenby — represent the breadth of talent across class years.
Meeting the scholarship criteria demands more than athletic prowess; each scholar must have achieved a 3.75 GPA for every semester and have appeared in no fewer than 40 percent of their team’s contests. The association permits exceptions for athletes who miss significant time due to injury or who serve primarily as backup goalies, ensuring that circumstances beyond performance do not disqualify deserving students.
Since the program’s inception during the 2016‑17 academic year, Canisius has cultivated 57 scholar‑athletes who have amassed a total of 89 AHCA All‑American Scholar accolades. This cumulative record illustrates a culture where the Griffs’ tradition of competitive hockey coexists with a rigorous academic environment.
The recognition extends beyond individual achievement; it highlights the collaborative effort of coaches, faculty and the athletes themselves. As the American Hockey Coaches Association notes, the scholars embody the spirit of the organization’s mission to promote both sporting excellence and scholarly distinction.
