Connor Zilisch finally broke through the barrier that had kept him just outside the top ten in the NASCAR Cup Series. At Sonoma Raceway, the rookie turned a season of bad luck into a seventh‑place finish, his first career top‑ten result.
The achievement was all the more satisfying because it came after a series of setbacks on road courses. Earlier in the year, Zilisch had been spun twice at the Circuit of the Americas, ran out of fuel at Watkins Glen, and crashed at the spring event in Coronado, each time losing ground despite showing speed.
Looking Ahead
During the last stage he ran second for a spell, staying in the top five for most of the segment. With four laps remaining he slipped out of the top five but managed to hold on to seventh, a result that felt like a victory after the year’s frustrations.
In a post‑race interview, Zilisch expressed pride in his team’s effort and said the finish gave him confidence heading into the upcoming oval events at Chicagoland and the rest of the schedule.
