Leaving behind the familiar rinks of Alberta, he stepped into the bustling campus of Penn State, where the roar of nearly 75,000 fans at the outdoor showdown against Michigan State marked his first taste of college hockey’s unique atmosphere.
On the ice, Smith quickly proved his worth, logging heavy minutes in all situations and finishing fourth among NCAA defensemen with 11 goals while tying for first among freshman blueliners with 25 points.
He credits the experience with sharpening his maturity, noting that the discipline required to balance academics, social life, and a demanding schedule has been as valuable as any drill.
Smith says his skating speed allows him to recover when he ventures too far up the ice, but he is now focused on tightening his defensive reads and cutting down costly mistakes.
