Marcus Ratcliffe, a safety for Texas A&M, has quietly become the program’s most underrated defensive piece, drawing attention for his steady improvement and versatility on the field.
The Making of an Underrated Star
The San Diego native arrived on campus after a three‑star rating in the 2023 247Sports Composite, opting for San Diego State over offers from Cal, Colorado and BYU, and he excelled at Cathedral Catholic High School on both sides of the ball, playing free safety and wide receiver.
During his true freshman year with the Aztecs he started 11 games, logged 555 defensive snaps, and posted a 21.7% missed‑tackle rate, a statistic that placed him among the more reliable tacklers early in his career.
After transferring to Texas A&M, Ratcliffe refined his technique, using his long arms and frame to improve his box play and deep safety responsibilities, cutting his missed‑tackle rate in half by 2025 and emerging as a more polished defender.
Coaches now view him as a versatile anchor for the Aggies’ defense, and his rise illustrates how a player once overlooked can become a cornerstone of a team’s success.
