Tommy Golding, the longtime Athletic Director at Martinsville High School, has been named the new head varsity football coach for the upcoming season, stepping into a role he previously held on an interim basis.
A dual appointment
In his new capacity, Golding will continue to oversee the school's athletic programs while directing the football team, ensuring that the administrative and coaching responsibilities reinforce one another.
He replaces Joe Fielder, who stepped down from the head coaching position earlier this year, and will bring three decades of football experience to the sidelines.
Continuity through internal promotion
The decision to promote Golding from within reflects a desire for stability among student‑athletes and the coaching staff, allowing the program to build on recent successes without the disruption of a major overhaul.
A physical brand of play
Golding has said he intends to emphasize a hard‑hitting, physical style of play that has long defined Martinsville’s teams, a philosophy he believes is essential to competing at the highest level in the region.
Leadership endorsement
Superintendent Dr. Zebedee Talley Jr. praised Golding’s experience and leadership, noting that his appointment safeguards continuity for both players and staff while the school begins a comprehensive search for a permanent head coach for the 2027 season.
