A season of ambition and transition
Las Cruces Public Schools have released their 2026 football schedules, a document that reads like a roadmap of ambition. From the Bulldogs' pursuit of another 6A state championship to new leadership on the sidelines, the schedule sets the tone for a year where tradition meets transformation.
Under veteran head coach Mark Lopez, the Bulldogs enter the season riding a 12‑1 record that includes three consecutive double‑digit win campaigns. Lopez, now in his third decade at the helm, remains focused on adding another state title to the program’s storied history.
Across town, Centennial is looking to reclaim its place atop District 2‑6A. New head coach Aaron Ocampo takes the reins, promising a fresh approach while inheriting a roster that has tasted district dominance in recent years.
Mayfield, meanwhile, has appointed former Chaparral coach Joseph Frias as its new leader, succeeding retiring veteran Gary Bradley. The transition marks the start of a new era for the team, which will open its season at home against Los Lunas.
Organ Mountain has promoted Gregory Mallory to head coach, a move that brings a different philosophy to the program. Notably, the Scorpions will play the most non‑Friday games of any LCPS team this year, scheduling three contests on alternative days.
The schedule also features a neutral‑site showdown between Las Cruces and Dumas at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, a game that will be played on a Saturday and could serve as an early litmus test for both squads.
District alignments remain a central storyline. Las Cruces, Organ Mountain and Centennial share District 2‑6A with Carlsbad, Clovis, Eldorado, Hobbs and Volcano Vista, while Mayfield competes in District 2‑5A alongside Alamogordo, Artesia, Chaparral, Deming, Gadsden, Goddard and Roswell. Rivalry games, such as the Centennial‑Organ Mountain matchup that traditionally opens October, have historically decided district championships in five of the last six seasons.
As the season unfolds, the interplay of seasoned coaches, fresh faces and tightly contested district rivalries promises a slate of memorable contests. Fans can expect the usual Friday night lights, a few Saturday surprises, and the ever‑present quest for a state championship that drives every play.
