Clemson Tigers Aim to Bounce Back After 7-6 Season with Transfer Additions and Coaching Changes

A look at the roster overhaul, key players and the road ahead for Dabo Swinney's squad

Clemson finished the 2024 season with a 7-6 record, marking Dabo Swinney's second-worst campaign as head coach. The Tigers entered the offseason aware that a turnaround would require more than just tweaking schemes; it would demand a complete overhaul of the roster.

To address a porous defense, Swinney added eleven transfers, nine of whom are slated to anchor the defensive line and secondary. Among the newcomers are safeties Corey Myrick and Jerome Carter III, cornerback Elliot Washington II, and defensive tackle Markus Strong, each bringing experience from programs such as Southern Miss, Old Dominion, Penn State, Oklahoma, Georgia Southern, UNC, Cal and LSU.

The quarterback position remains unsettled. Redshirt junior Christopher Vizzina is expected to start, while true freshman Tait Reynolds also vying for snaps. Both will be tasked with limiting turnovers as the offense seeks stability.

Adding to the offensive storyline, former coordinator Chad Morris was rehired to work directly with the quarterbacks. Morris, who guided the Tigers from 2011 to 2014, brings a familiar playbook and a proven track record of developing talent.

The Road Ahead

Winning the ACC championship emerges as the most realistic path to a College Football Playoff berth. To achieve that, Clemson must accumulate at least six conference victories, with the possibility of seven if the schedule permits.

The non‑conference slate begins with a marquee matchup against LSU, followed by tests against Cal, Miami and other early opponents. The buyout clause in Swinney's contract, set at $57 million for 2026, adds financial weight to any decision about his future.

If Vizzina can stay healthy and the defensive unit clicks, the Tigers could exceed expectations and rewrite the narrative from a disappointing 7‑6 season to a championship‑contending campaign.
