Kager Knueppel, a four-star forward from Wisconsin Lutheran, announced his commitment to Duke University, becoming the first pledge in the Blue Devils' 2027 recruiting class.
The announcement places the 6-foot-10 prospect among the nation's top 30 prospects and marks a significant early win for Coach Mike Elko's program as it looks to rebuild its frontcourt.
A family ties that run deep
Kager follows in the footsteps of his older brother, Kon Knueppel, who starred for Duke before embarking on an NBA career with the Charlotte Hornets. Their mother, Chari Nordgaard Knueppel, remains the all-time leading scorer at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, a legacy that has shaped the brothers' basketball DNA.
Their father, known as Kon Sr., was a standout at Wisconsin Lutheran College, where he amassed over 2,000 career points, underscoring a multi-generational commitment to the sport.
Rise on the EYBL circuit
Kager's recruitment gathered momentum after a series of impressive showings on the Nike EYBL circuit. In the spring he averaged 16.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists while shooting better than 50% from three-point range, highlighting his shooting touch and versatility.
Scouting director Cameron Salerno of CBS Sports praised the prospect's perimeter shooting and long-term versatility, noting that Kager can handle the ball in either direction and make smart passes.
Analysts project him as a classic stretch-four with emerging two-way capabilities, a player who will need to add strength before making an immediate impact in the ACC.
Choosing Duke over the power elite
When weighing his options, Kager listed Michigan, Purdue and Wisconsin among his finalists, but Duke emerged as the clear favorite. The decision was influenced by family connections, the program's track record of developing talent, and the allure of continuing the Knueppel legacy in Durham.
The commitment also echoes the path of his brother Kon, who helped the Blue Devils reach the Final Four alongside Cooper Flagg before being selected fourth overall by the Charlotte Hornets and earning a spot on the NBA All-Rookie First Team.
Duke hopes the younger Knueppel can carve out his own identity while building on the foundation laid by his family and the university's rich basketball tradition.
