Damar Hamlin, a former University of Pittsburgh standout and current Buffalo Bills safety, has been selected as a finalist for the 2026 Muhammad Ali Humanitarian of the Year Award, a honor that spotlights athletes who translate their platform into meaningful community service.
The recognition comes after Hamlin’s dramatic survival of a cardiac arrest during a 2023 NFL game, an incident that prompted him to launch the Chasing M's Foundation, an organization dedicated to CPR education, AED accessibility and youth empowerment.
Building a Legacy of Life‑Saving Skills
Through a series of outreach programs, the foundation has reached millions with hands‑on CPR training, placed automated external defibrillators in schools and community centers, and advocated for stronger cardiac emergency response policies in 29 states.
Hamlin’s efforts extend beyond emergency preparedness; the nonprofit invests in scholarships, mentorship opportunities and violence‑prevention initiatives, aiming to give young people the tools to thrive both on and off the field.
In his hometown of McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania, Hamlin plans to break ground on a Youth Empowerment Center that will serve as a hub for health education, leadership development and local outreach.
Reflecting on his journey from the Panthers’ defensive line to the NFL, Hamlin credits his collegiate experience at Pitt for shaping his work ethic and sense of responsibility, a narrative that resonates with fans and peers alike.
The winner of the Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Award will be announced at the 2026 ESPYS, where Hamlin hopes to amplify the foundation’s reach and inspire a new generation of athletes to champion social change.
