Fope Ayo, a 6‑foot‑5 center ranked No. 50 among the 2026 college prospects, has officially committed to the University of Michigan’s women’s basketball program.
Her path to the sport began with hesitation; as a teenager she resisted playing because of her height, but a turning point came when her high school coach, Ushearnda Stroud, helped her embrace the game and develop her skills.
During a standout senior season at Austin Prep, Ayo averaged 22.3 points, 17.3 rebounds and 4.1 blocks per game, captured Gatorade Player of the Year honors in Massachusetts and became the school’s first athlete to reach 1,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds.
Michigan head coach Kim Barnes Arico highlighted Ayo’s size and potential, noting that the recruit will be a great fit for the team’s identity and can make an immediate impact in the paint.
A versatile addition to the Wolverines
Ayo has approached her preparation methodically, reviewing footage of WNBA stars to refine her footwork and drawing on a dance background that gives her exceptional agility and flexibility on the court.
The Wolverines’ coaching staff is enthusiastic about integrating Ayo into the program, believing her unique skill set will strengthen the frontcourt and contribute to the team’s future success.
