A New Era in Stillwater
Eric Morris, who previously engineered turnarounds at Incarnate Word and North Texas, has left his post in Denton for the sprawling plains of Stillwater, Oklahoma. His reputation rests on coaxing hidden talent to the surface, a skill he honed while mentoring quarterbacks such as Patrick Mahomes, Baker Mayfield and Cam Ward. Now, Morris is tasked with resurrecting a Cowboys program that has stumbled through a 4‑20 stretch since its last bowl appearance in 2023.
The move comes with a sweeping roster renovation. Roughly 80 newcomers have been added, among them 16 transfers from North Texas, headlined by redshirt freshman Drew Mestemaker, who topped the nation in passing yards last season. Alongside Mestemaker, the Cowboys welcome Caleb Hawkins, Wyatt Young, Braydon Nelson and a host of other experienced players eager to rewrite the team's recent narrative.
Morris's offensive philosophy, which produced a scoring average of 45.1 points per game at North Texas, is expected to inject a high‑tempo, pass‑heavy attack into the Big 12. The coach's arrival coincides with a pivotal matchup against Colorado on October 24 in Stillwater, a game that will serve as an early barometer for the team's revival.
Beyond the field, the transfer portal has become a central storyline. Oklahoma State lost 66 players to the portal after the coaching change, making the influx of talent from Texas all the more critical. If the early chemistry translates into wins, the Cowboys could restore the prestige that defined the Gundy era and re‑engage a fan base hungry for a return to relevance.
