The St. Louis Blues announced today that Alexander Steen, a cornerstone of the team’s 2019 championship squad, will assume the role of general manager, succeeding longtime architect Doug Armstrong.
A Legacy of Leadership
Steen’s 15‑year playing career spanned more than 1,000 NHL games and culminated in a Stanley Cup victory that defined a generation of Blues fans. During his 12 seasons in St. Louis he tallied 622 points, helping the club shift from a perennial under‑performer to a consistent contender.
For the past two seasons he has served as a special assistant to the general manager, where he contributed to roster construction, player development and community outreach, building the relationships that now position him to lead the hockey operations department.
Armstrong, who guided the franchise for 16 seasons and compiled a record 682 wins as GM, will transition to President of Hockey Operations, a move that preserves his strategic influence while allowing the team to explore fresh perspectives under Steen’s stewardship.
The reshuffle reflects a broader ambition to blend continuity with innovation, as the organization looks to sustain its competitive edge while honoring the legacy of a decade‑long partnership that brought the city its first championship.
