Valley City State University (VCSU) has announced the promotion of TJ Hokanson to head baseball coach, effective immediately. The decision follows a period of strong performance by the Vikings, who finished second in both the Frontier Conference regular season and tournament.
A Strategic Appointment
Hokanson arrives after four years at the University of Minnesota‑Crookston, where he served as hitting and infield coach. During that time he helped develop players who earned NCAA Division II All‑American honors and later signed professional contracts.
A native of Chanhassen, Minnesota, Hokanson previously led Chanhassen High School to a 27‑3 record and a Class 3A State Championship game appearance before launching his collegiate coaching career.
Prior to his coaching roles, he played at Minnesota Crookston, contributing as a left‑handed hitter and gaining firsthand experience that informs his instructional approach.
He replaces Alec DeMaria, who stepped down to accept a similar position at the University of Mary in Bismarck. DeMaria’s tenure helped stabilize the program after a period of transition.
With Hokanson at the helm, VCSU aims to leverage its recent conference standing and the university’s strong academic reputation to attract top talent and compete aggressively in the Frontier Conference.
