A new era for the infield
Ashton Larson is once again heading for the transfer portal, marking the second time in his college career that he will seek a new program. The Texas native spent a single season with the Longhorns after arriving from LSU, appearing in the outfield and at first base while posting a .258 average, 33 hits, 16 RBI and a lone home run.
With Larson's departure, the team has named veteran infielder Casey Borba as the expected starter at first base for the 2027 season. Borba, who has primarily manned third base, will shift to fill the void, bringing his defensive reliability and experience to the new position.
The infield reshuffle comes as the roster undergoes significant change. Ten players have left the program, yet four fresh recruits have been added, underscoring the staff's confidence in both returning athletes and incoming talent.
Depth concerns remain at second base, where Ethan Mendoza's future is uncertain and the only scholarship holder at that spot heading into next year. Prospect Easton Autrey may forgo college, leaving the team to search for additional options to provide backup and flexibility.
Other moves include the arrival of Linkin Garcia, a transfer from Texas Tech, who will take over the hot corner at third base. Meanwhile, Temo Beccera's eligibility has expired, ending his stint as a dynamic infielder for the Longhorns.
Head coach Jim Schlossnagle has voiced optimism about the returning core and the pipeline of talent, emphasizing that the program is focused on building continuity despite the churn.
