Wes Timmons Takes the Helm of Union University Baseball

A Look at the Coach’s Background and Vision

A Strategic Appointment

Union University announced this week that Wes Timmons will assume the role of head coach for its baseball program, bringing to an end a decade‑long chapter at Shorter University.

Timmons, who steered Shorter to five consecutive Gulf South Conference tournaments between 2019 and 2024, leaves with a career record of 239‑202 and a winning percentage just above 54 percent.

His tenure was marked by a third‑place finish in the GSC regular‑season standings in 2021, a milestone that underscored his ability to develop competitive teams.

Before his coaching career, Timmons spent ten years as a professional player within the Atlanta Braves and Oakland Athletics farm systems, where he posted a career‑high .341 batting average, eight home runs and 62 RBI in 2011.

Across 1,047 minor‑league games he compiled a .280 average, collected 202 doubles, 12 triples, 48 home runs and 409 RBI, statistics that reflect a consistent offensive presence.

Timmons’ collegiate roots trace back to Appalachian State University, where he earned MEAC Player of the Year honors after batting .425 in 61 games as a senior, and to Bethune‑Cookman College, where he completed his undergraduate studies.

Mark Campbell, Director of Athletics at Union University, praised the hire, citing Timmons’ blend of playing experience, coaching success and leadership qualities that align with the university’s mission.

The new coach and his wife, Randi, are parents to six children — Kallyn, Irelyn, Cross, Bayr, Oak and Kaemyn Dae — who will join the campus community as the program moves forward.
