A Community‑Driven Camp on Home Turf
The event, held on June 27 at Macomb L'Anse Creuse North High School — Conklin’s own high school and the site of his formative years — welcomed more than 200 youngsters divided into two age groups. Organized by former NFL tight end Tyler Conklin alongside his friend Saylor Lavallii, the day blended football drills with broader life lessons.
Beyond the gridiron, the camp emphasized mentorship and leadership. Over twenty former Central Michigan University players, supplemented by current and retired NFL athletes, provided one‑on‑one instruction, guiding participants through skill drills while also fostering confidence and teamwork.
Conklin, now entering his ninth NFL season with the Detroit Lions, returned to his roots to share a personal narrative that stretches from a walk‑on at Central Michigan to a professional career. He urged the campers to dream big, believe in themselves, and never surrender their ambitions.
The atmosphere was festive, with food vendors, merchandise tables, a bounce house, a DJ, and a dunk tank that let winners try to bring the star down. Awards were handed out for competition winners, and each camper left with a T‑shirt, a signed player card, a photo opportunity, and a complimentary meal voucher.
The Tyler Conklin Foundation, launched earlier this year and based in Troy, aims to continue such outreach, using sport as a vehicle for community development. With plans to expand its reach, the organization hopes to replicate the model in other neighborhoods, ensuring that the next generation benefits from both athletic and personal growth.
