Tyrell Jenkins, a former Major League Baseball pitcher and a standout Henderson Lion, has been appointed head coach of the Grapeland Sandies baseball program, taking over a team that looks to rebuild its tradition of competitiveness.
From Player to Coach
Jenkins, who most recently served as head coach at Westwood High School in Palestine for the 2024 season, said the opportunity feels like a natural next step after years of working with high school talent and dreaming of shaping a program from the ground up.
The Sandies will benefit from Jenkins’s extensive playing background, which includes being drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2010 MLB draft, a trade to the Atlanta Braves in 2014, and a major‑league debut in Miami against the Marlins in June 2016 where he tossed a single inning without allowing a run.
Reflecting on that debut, Jenkins described the moment as surreal and one of the cooler experiences of his career, a memory that fuels his desire to give his players similarly memorable milestones.
A Vision for the Future
His philosophy blends the discipline learned in professional baseball with a community‑first mindset, aiming to forge relationships not only with the players but also with families and local supporters.
Having previously coached at Westwood High, Jenkins knows the East Texas landscape and is eager to leverage that familiarity to attract talent, secure resources, and build a sustainable program that can compete regionally.
The hiring also resonates with local institutions such as Baylor University, whose athletic legacy Jenkins admires, and with the broader baseball ecosystem that includes the St. Louis Cardinals and Atlanta Braves, teams that shaped his development.
Looking Forward
While Jenkins admits he never got to experience a college football game — a regret he shares — he remains focused on the baseball field, where he hopes to be a pillar for the Sandies and a mentor for the next generation.
