A Brief but Impactful Tenure
Johnny Giavotella, a former Major League Baseball infielder, revealed that he would step down as general manager of the University of New Orleans baseball program after just ten months in the role. His exit was directly tied to the decision not to renew a government‑backed initiative that had funded the program.
The baseball program was a centerpiece of a $1.95 million public‑private partnership called the Recreation for Youth Partnership. A $750,000 grant, allocated for a single year, covered staff salaries, transportation, scholarships, marketing and equipment, providing the financial backbone that allowed the team to expand its reach.
During his short stint, Giavotella leveraged his baseball background to attract unprecedented donations, drawing attention from alumni, local businesses and community leaders. The resulting publicity not only boosted the program’s profile but also deepened its connection to the surrounding neighborhood.
Colleagues and students described his impact as transformative, noting that the funds and visibility he secured created new opportunities for young athletes who might otherwise have been overlooked. His outreach extended beyond the diamond, fostering mentorship and youth development across the city.
The University of New Orleans is currently transitioning into the Louisiana State University system, planning to rebrand as LSU New Orleans on July 1. This restructuring reflects a broader effort to consolidate resources and expand academic and athletic offerings under a unified banner.
