A fresh face in the Bruins' receiving room
Leland Smith, a 6‑4, 218‑pound wide receiver, is set to arrive in Westwood this fall after a circuitous path through the college football ranks.
The Houston native first drew attention at Strake Jesuit High School, where as a senior he amassed 845 receiving yards and nine touchdowns, earning a reputation as a reliable target despite being unranked at the time.
After high school, Smith opted for Fullerton College, where he quickly became the Hornets’ leading receiver, posting 50 catches, 845 yards and nine scores, a performance that set the stage for his next move.
A transfer to Purdue offered a brief stint in the Big Ten, but the former tight end managed only 72 yards, prompting a move to San Jose State, where he rebounded with 688 yards and earned All‑Mountain West honors.
Now at UCLA, Smith joins a Bruins squad that is counting on his size, speed and blocking ability to diversify the offense, especially as quarterback Nico Iamaleava looks to expand his play‑action arsenal.
Coaches have praised his willingness to engage in the trenches, noting that his blocking skill set could open lanes for both the running game and his fellow receivers.
The addition of Smith also brings a veteran presence to a room that includes emerging talents such as Marcus Harris, and his chemistry with Iamaleava could prove pivotal as the Bruins aim to climb the Pac‑12 standings.
