Sabres Sign Zellweger to Multi-Year Bridge Deal

Contract aims to evaluate fit while opening power-play opportunities

Sabres Secure Zellweger with Multi-Year Deal

The Buffalo Sabres announced this week that they have reached an agreement with defenseman Olen Zellweger on a three-year, $9 million contract, a deal that bridges the gap between his recent NHL performances and the team’s long-term defensive plans.

Zellweger, 22, arrived in Buffalo after being acquired from the Anaheim Ducks, where he logged 62 games in his debut NHL season, contributing seven goals and 13 assists. The contract gives the Sabres a controlled entry point for a player who still has arbitration rights ahead.

General manager Kevyn Adams highlighted the strategic timing of the signing, noting that the trade of Bowen Byram creates additional power-play minutes that could accelerate Zellweger’s development on the ice.

The move also reflects the organization’s confidence in the player’s trajectory, given his strong junior pedigree. He was a second-round selection in 2021 and posted back-to-back 78-point seasons in the Western Hockey League, followed by a 37-point showing in 44 games for the AHL’s San Diego Gulls during the 2023-24 campaign.

While his NHL output has been modest compared with his junior numbers, Zellweger’s defensive reliability and skating ability have drawn praise from analysts such as Elliotte Friedman, who has pointed to the potential upside of pairing him with established blueliners like Rasmus Dahlin and Owen Power.

The contract’s structure provides both the Sabres and Zellweger with flexibility. It serves as a bridge, allowing the team to assess his fit within the roster while giving the player security and a platform to potentially exceed the deal’s value in future negotiations.
