A Strategic Addition for the Blazers
Josh Hayes, a 6‑foot‑9 forward with a reputation for shot‑blocking and versatile scoring, has officially signed with the University of Alabama at Birmingham, adding depth to the Blazers' frontcourt for the upcoming season.
Coach Andy Kennedy highlighted Hayes' length and experience, noting that the former Big 12 competitor brings a proven track record of double‑digit performances and a 64% field‑goal efficiency that made him a reliable option in 32 games at Utah.
Hayes' journey includes a standout season at Utah where he started the first ten games, logged nine multi‑block contests and scored a career‑high 10 points against Ole Miss. Prior to that, he contributed 9.9 points and 5.2 rebounds per game at Northwest Florida State, earning Panhandle All‑Conference Second‑Team honors.
The recruit also excelled at Appalachian State, where he erupted for 18 points in a single contest, and his high school days at Gainesville High School saw him average 13.7 points and 9.1 rebounds while guiding the team to the FHSAA 6A State Tournament quarterfinals. He previously helped The Rock School capture a state championship in 2021‑22.
Now the 13th addition to UAB's 2026 signing class, Hayes joins a cohort of high school prospects and transfers aimed at reshaping the roster. His commitment underscores the program's ambition to blend size, skill and defensive presence as the Blazers look to contend in the Conference USA race.
A Look at the New Faces
Alongside Hayes, the class features guards and wings from across the country, each bringing distinct skill sets. The coaching staff believes the mix of size and perimeter threat will diversify the offensive scheme and bolster rebounding margins.
The university's athletic department, in partnership with local sponsors, will showcase the new roster through a series of community events later this month, reinforcing the program's connection to Birmingham and the broader Alabama fan base.
