University at Buffalo announced this week that Head Men's Basketball Coach George Halcovage III has signed a contract extension that will keep him at the helm through the 2029‑30 season. The decision was confirmed by Vice President and Director of Athletics Mark Alnutt, who praised the coach’s steady rise and the program’s upward trajectory.
Building Momentum on the Court
Under Halcovage’s guidance the Bulls posted a 17‑win campaign in 2025‑26, marking their most victories since the 2021‑22 season. The team opened the year with an eight‑game winning streak, the first such start in modern program history, and earned back‑to‑back appearances in the AP Top‑25 poll — a feat not seen since the 2018‑19 season.
The success isn’t limited to the scoreboard. Over the past two seasons the program has collected three All‑MAC honors and six Academic All‑MAC recognitions, while student‑athletes have posted a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 for four straight semesters. In fall 2024 the university recorded a record 3.441 GPA, underscoring a culture that values scholarship as much as competition.
A Shared Vision for the Future
Coach Halcovage expressed appreciation for the support he has received from University President Tripathi and Athletics Director Mark Alnutt, noting that the extended commitment reflects a collective belief in the program’s direction. He also took the opportunity to acknowledge his family, including wife Lizzy Halcovage and son Collin Halcovage, whose presence has been a constant source of strength.
The extension not only stabilizes the coaching staff but also signals a longer‑term investment in recruiting, facilities and community outreach. As the Bulls look ahead, the blend of competitive ambition and academic rigor positions the program as a model for mid‑major basketball programs across the nation.
