Colorado Avalanche have officially added a new piece to their defensive corps, signing 29-year-old right-shot defenseman Noah Juulsen to a two-year agreement worth $1.1 million in average annual value.
The deal, announced on Tuesday, brings the former Philadelphia Flyers blue-liner into a room that already boasts five other right-handed blueliners, positioning Juulsen as the seventh defenseman on the depth chart.
Contract Details
Juulsen’s contract carries a $1.1 million AAV, a figure that leaves the Avalanche with $1.3 million of cap space remaining as they manage a roster of 12 forwards, seven defensemen and two goaltenders under contract.
The agreement runs through the next two seasons, providing the club with a cost-controlled option while they evaluate younger talent and maintain flexibility under the salary cap.
What Juulsen Brings
During the most recent campaign he appeared in 52 NHL games for the Flyers, setting personal bests with nine assists and a total of ten points. He also logged five playoff contests, gaining postseason experience that could prove valuable in Colorado’s push for the Stanley Cup.
A first-round draft pick in 2015, Juulsen has steadily progressed through the professional ranks, earning a reputation for reliable defensive play and a willingness to block shots.
Roster Outlook
Coach Jared Bednar will likely slot Juulsen into the bottom pairing, using his right-handed shot to balance the lineup. The move comes as the Avalanche look to deepen their defensive depth ahead of a critical stretch of games.
General manager Chris MacFarland emphasized that the signing addresses a need for a depth defenseman behind the top six, noting that the team’s remaining cap flexibility makes the addition financially sensible.
With the contract in place, the Avalanche’s blue line now features a mix of veteran presence and youthful energy, a combination that could prove decisive as the club aims to translate its strong regular-season performance into playoff success.
