The New Language of Hitting
When a ball leaves the bat, its trajectory is no longer judged by the naked eye alone. Statcast captures exit velocity, the speed at which the ball makes contact, and launch angle, the vertical degree of the ball’s path. Together they paint a picture of a hitter’s raw power and the optimal conditions for a productive outcome.
A hard‑hit ball is defined as any contact that leaves the bat at 95 miles per hour or higher. This threshold separates routine grounders from the kind of drives that often turn into extra‑base hits. Complementing that, a launch angle between eight and 32 degrees is considered the sweet spot, producing the highest likelihood of a hit while minimizing the risk of a pop‑up or a ground ball.
Beyond the Basics: Expected Outcomes and Speed
Advanced analytics extend the narrative. Expected batting average, or xBA, estimates the probability that a given batted ball will become a hit based on its exit velocity and launch angle. Similarly, xwOBA blends exit velocity, launch angle and a runner’s sprint speed to forecast the chance of a run‑scoring event. These metrics give context to outcomes that might otherwise appear as flukes.
Performance consistency is measured in different ways. EV50 captures the average exit velocity of the hardest half of a batter’s hits, while Adjusted EV normalizes each contact by comparing it to an 88‑mph benchmark. Bat speed, recorded at the bat’s sweet spot, is averaged over a player’s top 90 percent of swings, and a fast swing is marked by a bat speed of 75 miles per hour or more.
Pitching, Fielding and the Full‑Game Picture
On the mound, Statcast tracks pitch speed, movement, spin rate and release distance, feeding into metrics such as xERA, which translates expected outcomes into a familiar ERA scale. Defensive metrics include catcher pop time, fielder throw speed and runner range, while a new outfield metric called Jump highlights the quickest reactions and most direct routes. The system also quantifies a player’s top running speed in feet per second, labeling any sprint over 30 feet per second as a Bolt.
Catcher defense receives special attention through a metric that evaluates skill at preventing wild pitches and passed balls, comparing each catcher to peers. Meanwhile, the overall defensive rating converts fielding performance onto a run‑based scale, allowing teams to assess how many wins a player adds with his glove. All of these data points coalesce into a comprehensive portrait of player value that goes far beyond traditional stats.
