Local Basketball Programs Reconfigure for 2026‑27 Season

Eight high school teams shift divisions as rosters and coaching staff change across Lorain County

A sweeping realignment of local basketball divisions

The 2026‑27 boys basketball season will see a notable reshuffling of teams across divisions, with eight programs from the Lorain County area moving to lower tiers. The changes reflect a combination of graduating seniors, staff turnover and strategic realignment within the Southwestern Conference and the Lorain County League.

Elyria, once a Division I staple, will drop to Division II after graduating eight seniors from the team that reached the regional finals in 2026 and losing key coaching personnel. Assistant coach Dan Gundert departed for a head‑coach role at Columbia, while longtime head coach Brett Larrick stepped down, causing the program to skip the Midwest Live tournament.

Other schools are also adjusting. Avon Lake and Olmsted Falls are sliding to Division III, joining Midview in that tier, while Rocky River and Elyria Catholic are moving down to Division IV. Meanwhile, Vermilion and Clearview are climbing to Division V, and Wellington is advancing from Division V to Division VI, aligning with Black River, Columbia and Oberlin.

The realignment reshapes conference matchups and playoff brackets. Keystone will no longer meet Lutheran East in Division V playoffs, and Lutheran East itself is rising to Division I after capturing four consecutive state titles. These shifts promise new rivalries and fresh competitive dynamics for the upcoming season.
