Donovan Newby, a former UNCW men’s basketball guard who helped the Seahawks capture the 2025 Coastal Athletic Association Tournament title, has rejoined the program in a new capacity. He will now serve as the director of player personnel, overseeing player development, scouting, talent evaluation, and recruiting.
Newby’s journey to this role began with two seasons at UW‑Milwaukee before he transferred to UNCW, where he quickly became a cornerstone of the team. Over three seasons with the Seahawks he amassed 1,005 points, shot 18‑of‑18 from the free‑throw line in his final six games, and set a program record with eight three‑pointers in a road win at Hofstra.
A Career Defined by Consistency and Clutch Performances
During the 2024‑25 campaign Newby started all 35 games, averaging 14.4 points per game while earning All‑CAA and All‑Region honors. He capped the season with a career‑high 33‑point outing against Georgia Southern and contributed 16.6 points per game in the CAA Tournament, highlighted by a 17‑point performance in the championship victory over Delaware.
His impact extended beyond scoring; Newby was known for his steady hand at the line, never missing a free throw in the final six games of his collegiate career. That reliability helped the team close out tight contests and cement his reputation as a leader.
Returning to UNCW as a staff member allows Newby to blend his playing experience with a front‑office perspective. He will work closely with assistant coach Craig Ponder, another UNCW alum, to shape the next generation of Seahawks talent.
