A tougher road ahead
North Carolina’s men’s basketball team has unveiled a 2026‑27 nonconference slate that promises to be one of the most demanding in recent memory.
The Tar Heels will face six opponents who posted at least twenty victories last season, and three of those teams are projected to be ranked inside the top twenty‑five when the new season begins.
Among the highlights is a neutral‑site showdown with Illinois, the program that reached the Final Four last year, scheduled to take place in Nashville, Tennessee. It will mark the first meeting between the two schools since 2010.
The Tar Heels are also set to meet NC State twice, with one of those contests slated for the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, North Carolina. While the venue has not been officially confirmed, the matchup is expected to materialize.
In addition to Illinois and the two games against NC State, the schedule includes contests against Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky and West Virginia, all of which enjoyed successful campaigns in the previous year.
The increased difficulty reflects the coaching staff’s ambition to prepare the team for ACC play and to bolster their NCAA tournament résumé.
Fans can anticipate a season filled with high‑stakes matchups, many of which will be played on neutral courts or in iconic venues across the Southeast.
