A Coaching Profile
Andy Contois is poised to make his way to East Lansing as the 2026‑27 season approaches, bringing a résumé that blends playing grit with coaching acumen. His arrival signals a strategic move for Michigan State’s program, which seeks to deepen its talent pipeline and sharpen player development.
Contois’s playing career began at Northern Michigan, where he posted 97 points over 131 games and earned alternate‑captain honors in 2005‑06. He later turned professional, logging ten seasons across Finland, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Scotland, Hungary and the Netherlands, gaining a global perspective that would later enrich his coaching approach.
Transitioning to the bench, Contois amassed extensive coaching experience. He served as an assistant at Northern Michigan before returning as an assistant ahead of the 2024‑25 season, and spent three years as associate head coach of the Youngstown Phantoms, a stint that culminated in a Clark Cup championship in 2022‑23. During that period the Phantoms posted a 100‑61‑16‑9 record and produced 20 NHL draft picks.
His two‑year tenure with the ECHL’s Indy Fuel further highlighted his ability to elevate talent, as the Fuel led the league in AHL call‑ups under his guidance. Prior to that, he guided the Central Illinois Flying Aces and the Brookings Blizzard, accumulating a diverse coaching portfolio that spans junior, collegiate and professional environments.
Contois’s upcoming role in East Lansing will leverage this breadth of experience. He is expected to mentor prospects, oversee player development initiatives, and contribute to a culture that values both competitive success and holistic growth. The move is viewed as a calculated step to strengthen Michigan State’s recruiting reach and on‑ice performance.
Beyond the X’s and O’s, Contois brings a narrative of perseverance and adaptability. His journey from a standout collegiate player to a coach who has navigated multiple continents offers a unique lens for young athletes. As the program looks ahead, his presence is likely to inspire both staff and players to pursue excellence with a broader, more interconnected vision.
