A tribute on the track
Derek Kneeland, a longtime friend and spotter for the late NASCAR legend Kyle Busch, is set to take the wheel of the iconic No. 8 car for the upcoming Celebration of America 300 at Oxford Plains Speedway in Maine.
The race, scheduled for July 1st and 2nd, will be streamed live on RacingAmerica.TV, giving fans across the country a chance to witness a heartfelt homage.
Kneeland’s connection to Busch goes beyond the pit wall; the two shared countless on‑track moments and a friendship that lasted years.
After Busch’s tragic death in May, his father, Tom Busch, gave Kneeland his blessing to drive the No. 8, a gesture that underscores the deep respect that still surrounds the Busch family.
The No. 8 Legacy
The No. 8 has become a symbol of Busch’s indomitable spirit, and Kneeland hopes to capture that spirit by aiming for a victory that would honor his friend’s memory.
Richard Childress Racing, the organization listed among the event’s partners, is expected to provide technical support, adding another layer of significance to the entry.
For many fans, the number 8 is synonymous with Busch’s relentless pursuit of excellence, and seeing it back on the track evokes both nostalgia and a renewed sense of purpose.
The emotional weight of the event is amplified by the fact that it will take place in the state where Busch spent much of his early career, making the tribute feel like a homecoming.
