Joshua Dobson, a five-star cornerback from South Carolina, announced his commitment to the University of South Carolina on Wednesday, electing the Gamecocks over Auburn, Michigan and Texas A&M. The decision marks a high-profile addition to Shane Beamer’s roster and underscores the program’s rising momentum in the 2027 recruiting cycle.
A Recruit With Proven Playmaking
During his high school career at Fort Mill, Dobson displayed versatility, logging four tackles and a pass breakup while also contributing two receiving touchdowns and a kickoff return for a score. As a sophomore he amassed 48 tackles, 10 pass breakups, three interceptions and two kickoff return touchdowns, showcasing the playmaking ability that earned him a top-15 national ranking.
Ranking services placed Dobson as the No. 8 cornerback and No. 5 prospect in North Carolina for the 2027 class, while the USA TODAY High School Sports composite listed him as the No. 15 overall player and the No. 3 cornerback in the nation. 247Sports had previously positioned the Gamecocks’ 2027 class at 57th overall, with only 13 prior commitments, three of which were four-star prospects.
Beamer highlighted the pledge as a testament to the staff’s ability to compete with traditional powerhouses, noting that South Carolina has now secured a five-star recruit in three of its last four recruiting cycles. The commitment is expected to influence future recruiting conversations and could serve as a catalyst for additional high-profile pledges.
For the Gamecocks, the addition of Dobson not only bolsters the defensive backfield but also adds a dynamic playmaker who can contribute on special teams. As the 2027 class takes shape, the early signing period will be closely watched to see how South Carolina capitalizes on this momentum.
