Sony Pictures has announced that its upcoming baseball‑centric comedy "The Comebacker" will hit theaters on July 30, 2027, bringing a fresh take on the sport to the big screen.
The film is being directed by Marielle Heller, whose previous work on "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood" earned critical acclaim for its warm storytelling. Heller will helm a script adapted from a short story by Pulitzer‑finalist Dave Eggers, whose narrative centers on an aging beat reporter whose love for baseball is rekindled by the arrival of a prodigious new pitcher.
"The Comebacker" is being produced by Gary Goetzman’s Playtone alongside Leah Holzer’s Defiant by Nature, with additional backing from Republic Pictures and Focus Features. Tom Hanks stars in the lead role, marking his second collaboration with Eggers after appearing in the director’s earlier adaptations of "A Hologram for the King" and "The Circle".
