A Strategic Addition for the Gators
The NCAA Transfer Portal officially closed on Tuesday, but anyone who entered the portal before the deadline remains eligible to commit to a new program. Florida seized the opportunity by announcing the addition of Samford catcher Eddie Marshall, marking the second transfer acquisition for the Gators on the same day.
Marshall arrives with four years of eligibility under the NCAA’s revised eligibility framework, giving the program a rare blend of experience and upside. In his freshman season he hit .252 with 12 home runs in 137 at‑bats, earning a spot on the SoCon All‑Freshman Team. What excites the coaching staff most is his ability to play catcher, first base and designated hitter, providing the Gators with flexibility as they reshape the roster.
Head coach Kevin O'Sullivan praised the move, saying the new nucleus — anchored by returning players such as Aidan King and Brendan Lawson — has the depth to compete at a high level. 'We’re building a versatile group that can adapt to different matchups,' O'Sullivan said, highlighting the strategic value of Marshall’s skill set.
The timing also aligns with the upcoming 2026 MLB Draft, which kicks off on July 11, with a July 27 deadline for drafted players who wish to return to college. By adding Marshall now, Florida positions itself to evaluate talent both on the field and in the draft pipeline, ensuring the program remains competitive in the SEC.
