Walking soccer has found a welcoming home at the Sports Pavilion in Lawrence, Kansas, where seniors gather each week for a relaxed version of the beloved game.
A gentle game for golden years
For Paula, a 57‑year‑old regular, the sessions are more than just a pastime; they provide a steady workout that adds up to roughly 5,000 steps in an hour, all without the strain of running or contact.
The sport, which originated in England about fifteen years ago, has spread to Canada and several European nations, adapting its rules to suit older players: no running, no physical contact, and a limit on how many times a participant can touch the ball.
Sessions are open to anyone aged 50 or older and are completely free. Upcoming games are scheduled for July 8 and July 15, with organizers hoping the program will continue through the winter months.
Beyond the physical benefits, the games foster camaraderie among participants, creating a supportive community that encourages seniors to stay active and engaged.
