A New Direction for Mesa Basketball
Colorado Mesa University’s men’s basketball program is entering a new chapter after head coach Mike Dunlap announced his resignation following the conclusion of the previous season. Stepping into the role is Ken DeWeese, who has been tasked with restoring the program’s former competitiveness.
The roster will look markedly different next year, with only guard Jaylen Pitman and center Ben Kaye returning from last season’s squad. The rest of the lineup will be assembled through a blend of six freshmen and an eight‑player transfer portal class that brings together Division I prospects, junior‑college standouts and athletes who have tasted NCAA Tournament action.
DeWeese emphasized that he searched nationwide for “young men of great character” who also know how to win. The incoming backcourt includes guards Walker Asp, CJ Willenborg, Alfonso Medina, JD Bradford and Cole Johnson, each expected to add depth and perimeter firepower.
To address size and interior presence, the coach added players such as Ryan Weber, Aidan Triplet and Drew Larson, who bring a mix of post skill and defensive versatility.
Among the transfers is Tait Spencer, a legacy Maverick who will move from Panola College in Carthage, Texas, bringing experience and a winning pedigree. The coaching staff also welcomed Leif Spencer, who previously played under DeWeese at Northern Colorado, further tying the new staff together.
With a mix of fresh talent and seasoned transfers, the team hopes to build chemistry quickly. Details about the incoming freshmen class will be released in the coming days, offering a clearer picture of the depth and potential that await the Mavericks.
