A Doubleheader to Remember
The Brainerd VFW baseball team entered a two‑game series against Monticello with hopes of building momentum, but the weekend ended with two narrow defeats. The first contest on July 1 saw the VFW trail early before rallying to a 12‑8 final score, while the following day’s matchup slipped away in a 7‑5 loss.
Jack Norman was a bright spot for Brainerd, finishing 1‑2 at the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored. His aggressive baserunning helped keep the VFW within striking distance, and his three RBIs proved crucial in the early innings.
Hakon Haapajoki added power to the lineup with a solo home run, while Crewe Dahlheimer and Eli Kossan each recorded doubles that kept the offense moving. Owen Miller contributed a 2‑2 performance, driving in two runs, and Eli Kossan delivered a solid pitching outing, throwing five innings and striking out five batters.
Second Game Highlights
In the second game, Brayden Velasco stepped up with two hits, providing a spark for the VFW’s attack. Ethan Johnson capitalized on the momentum, driving in two runs that briefly put Brainerd ahead. On the mound, Ethan Berg turned in a respectable three‑inning effort, fanning three opponents before the Monticello offense pulled ahead.
Despite the final scores, the team’s performances underscored a competitive spirit and highlighted several players who are poised to make a larger impact as the season progresses.
