A New Era for Plymouth Girls Basketball
Plymouth High School is set to join the Southeastern Conference in the 2027‑28 season, and the school has named Garai Fields as the new head coach of its girls basketball program. Fields, who previously led the Ann Arbor Huron varsity team, brings a deep understanding of the SEC‑Red schedule and a proven track record of competitive play.
A graduate of Ann Arbor Pioneer, Fields honed his coaching philosophy in the highly competitive SEC‑Red, where he developed defensive schemes that emphasized discipline and teamwork. His appointment signals the school’s intent to maintain a high standard of play as it transitions to a new conference.
Ryan Ballard, who guided the program for several successful years, departs after amassing 126 victories and capturing multiple championships. Under his leadership the team produced seven all‑state selections and sent numerous athletes to the collegiate level, leaving a legacy that Fields is eager to build upon.
Fields has said he is excited by the challenge of coaching in the tougher Southeastern Conference and is focused on preserving the defensive identity that defined Ballard’s tenure. He believes the incoming class of players can sustain the program’s momentum while adapting to the increased competition.
The roster will feature a blend of returning talent and newcomers, including Kyra Brandon, Ella Riley, Mackenzie Dicken, Annie Flavin, Evelyn Stiglish, Emma Johnson, Chaka Johnson, Shane Williams and Anna Fernandez. With seven seniors having graduated, the team is youthful but poised to grow under Fields’ guidance.
Community leaders and local organizations have voiced support for the transition, citing the school’s commitment to athletic excellence and the positive impact of sports on student development. The move also aligns with the broader schedule of the Kensington Lakes Activities Association and the Oakland Activities Association, which continue to provide structured competition across the region.
As the program looks ahead, the focus remains on building a culture of resilience, academic achievement, and sportsmanship. Ryan Ballard, reflecting on his coaching journey, has expressed gratitude for the players he worked with and has left the door open for future involvement in the sport.
