A new era for Arizona women's basketball
In the span of just over a year, the University of Arizona women's basketball program has experienced a complete overhaul, introducing a fresh coaching staff and an entirely new roster for the 2026‑27 season.
Head coach Becky Burke, who took the helm recently, is already charting an ambitious path: guiding the Wildcats to the NCAA Tournament, now expanded to 76 participants, a milestone that promises greater exposure and competition for the team.
The squad is notably young, with eight of the twelve scholarship players classified as freshmen or true sophomores, yet the infusion of talent brings a blend of raw energy and untapped potential.
Seniors Sumayah Sugapong and sophomore Molly Ladwig have been entrusted with leadership responsibilities, stepping up to mentor the newcomers and stabilize the lineup.
Burke emphasizes the team's rapid skill development and heightened athleticism, particularly at the guard positions, as a foundation for a turnaround that could see the Wildcats make a deep run in the tournament.
The new coaching ensemble includes veteran assistants James Ewing, Julie Hairgrove, Todd Starkey, Devan Newman, Karolina Ułan, Blessing ‘Adde’ Adebanjo, Daniah Trammell and Breanna Williams, each bringing distinct expertise to the program.
With a blend of youthful vigor and seasoned direction, Arizona aims to translate its offseason changes into on‑court success, targeting a significant rise in the national landscape.
