Bill Coyle to be Inducted into Saint Francis University Athletics Hall of Fame

Celebrating a 1,097‑point career and the many chapters of a lifelong basketball journey

Bill Coyle’s Hall of Fame Induction

The upcoming ceremony will place Bill Coyle among the distinguished members of the Saint Francis University Athletics Hall of Fame, recognizing a career that placed him eighth in program history with 1,097 points.

Coyle starred for the university from 1963 to 1967, a period marked by intimate gymnasiums and rivalries that defined college basketball of the era. His most unforgettable moment came in a clash with Saint Peter’s University, where he scored 19 points in the final minutes to secure an 82‑79 victory.

That game contributed to a 20‑6 season in which the team also knocked off Marshall University, a win that propelled both squads into the National Invitation Tournament, underscoring the competitive spirit of the time.

Coaches, Teammates, and the Road Ahead

Under the guidance of head coaches Skip Hughes and later John Clark, Coyle played alongside legends such as Norm Van Lier and benefited from the mentorship of assistants like Larry Lewis, Len Murray, John Kerr and Kevin Porter. He recalls the atmosphere at the old Jaffa Mosque in Altoona as a formative experience.

After graduation he spent two years as an assistant coach before moving on to a successful career in the furniture business, a venture he pursued alongside decades of marriage to his college sweetheart, with whom he shares three children and four grandchildren. His influence also extended to high school basketball, where he continued to shape young talent.

Coyle’s legacy endures not only in the record books but also in the community he helped build, a testament to a life lived at the intersection of sport, business, and family.
