Former Tennessee standout J.P. Estrella has chosen to remain with the Michigan Wolverines, even as the program navigates a recent coaching transition.
Estrella completed three seasons at Tennessee, and his most productive year came in 2025‑26 when he averaged 10.0 points and 5.4 rebounds while shooting 59.6 % from the field over 33 games.
The decision follows the departure of head coach Dusty May for the Dallas Mavericks, prompting the university to appoint Mike Boynton Jr. as interim coach. Estrella indicated that he wants to see the new leadership through and contribute to the team’s upcoming season.
His commitment comes at a time when the transfer portal is buzzing with activity; six former Volunteers — including Bishop Boswell, Jaylen Carey, Amari Evans, Clarence Massamba and Cade Phillips — have already secured new destinations.
A Shifting Landscape
The ripple effects extend beyond Michigan, reshaping rosters across the nation as programs vie for talent in an increasingly fluid recruiting environment.
