Hayfield and Blooming Prairie school districts have announced a two‑year cooperative football program that will field a single team for students in grades seven through twelve beginning this fall.
District leaders say the primary motivation is student safety, ensuring enough participants to conduct safe practices and competitive games while maintaining a positive experience for all athletes.
Both superintendents, activities directors and head football coaches have signed off on the arrangement, which will host practices and games in each community and share uniforms under the banner of the “Blooming Prairie Hayfield Football Team.”
A Balanced Approach to Tradition and Growth
The partnership will allow each school to continue celebrating its own Homecoming and long‑standing football customs, preserving local identity while fostering new friendships across district lines.
District officials plan to reassess participation numbers after the initial two seasons; if enrollment swells sufficiently, the teams could revert to separate squads, giving families flexibility as the sport’s popularity evolves.
Gregg Slaathaug, a key advocate for the initiative, urged parents, fans and community members to rally behind every student‑athlete as the program enters this new chapter, emphasizing the shared goal of a safe, enriching experience.
