A Season of Standouts
The Detroit Free Press, together with Buffalo Wild Wings, has named Alan Spahic of Troy Athens the Boys Prep Athlete of the Week, spotlighting a talented group of five high school athletes who have been nominated for the broader Boys Prep Athlete of the Season honor.
Spahic, a versatile forward, compiled a season that featured averages of 16 points, 8.7 rebounds and 21 blocks, underscoring his impact on both ends of the floor for his team.

The nomination list also includes Keandre Burtin, who posted double‑digit rebounds across three games and helped his squad reach a regional championship appearance; Kameren Higginbotham, the Macomb Athletic Conference Silver Division MVP who averaged 19.9 points per game; Jakobe Liford, who guided Avondale to a 23‑1 regular‑season record and a state semifinal berth; and Joe Smith, who closed his senior year with 1,085 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns.
While the weekly award celebrates individual excellence, it also reflects the depth of competition across Michigan’s high school sports landscape, where basketball continues to dominate the conversation and football standouts like Smith add further intrigue to the season’s narrative.
