Great Bend’s Annual Youth Baseball Cookout Brings Community Together

A night of games, food, and fireworks celebrates local youth baseball and supports park improvements.

A Night of Baseball and Community

The third annual cookout baseball night in Great Bend gathered all seven of Wahpeton's youth travel baseball teams, ranging from ages 7 to 12, for an evening of competition and camaraderie under the summer sky.

Heidi Spiekermeier, the 10U Blue Event Coordinator, teamed with Tracy Swanson, Eric Birchem and a host of volunteers to bring the event to life, underscoring the collaborative spirit that defines the tournament.

Corbin Lee, sports reporter for the Wahpeton Daily News and Richland County News Monitor, captured the action, noting the three scheduled games — 7U versus 8U, 9U versus 10U, and a combined 11U/12U matchup — that kept the diamonds buzzing.

Local farmer Darin Prochnow took the opportunity to educate the 9U players about the growth stages of corn, linking the sport to the region's agricultural roots, while corporate partners contributed essential resources.

Guardian Energy supplied the grill, Cargill provided paper products, Mannock Meats donated the meat, and Patriot Place Fireworks lit up the sky with a fireworks display, illustrating a network of community sponsorship.

The Great Bend Park Board was recognized for maintaining the park and field, and every participating family was invited to bring a potluck dish and make a financial contribution, resulting in roughly 350 burgers and 250 hot dogs served to about 400 attendees.

All proceeds from the night were earmarked for covering event costs, improving Great Bend Park, and bolstering local youth baseball programs, reinforcing the event's dual purpose of celebration and support.
