Colorado Mesa University’s ninth annual Pink The Rink hockey game has become a benchmark for charitable sports events in the region, raising $38,000 for Western Slope cancer programs.
Funds Directed to Patients
A May 8 press release from the university confirmed that every dollar will go directly to patients and families battling cancer across the Western Slope, ensuring that the money translates into tangible support.
The check was presented to Community Hospital President Chris Thomas and hospital staff after the game, marking a moment of collaboration between the university, the hospital and the broader community.
Team Spirit and Community Impact
CMU’s team secured a narrow 2-1 victory over Grand Canyon University, a win that coach Timothy Wineguard described as a testament to the squad’s hard work, maturity and selflessness.
Wineguard highlighted that the experience of playing hockey has given the players countless opportunities, but giving back to the community has become the most rewarding aspect of their journey.
A Legacy of Service
Since the inception of Pink The Rink in 2016, the initiative has amassed a total of $240,000, a figure that reflects both sustained donor generosity and the program’s growing national profile.
The effort has earned multiple Community Service Awards from the American Collegiate Hockey Association and a Congressional Community Service Award in 2018, underscoring its impact beyond the ice rink.
Looking forward, organizers hope the model can be replicated at other campuses, using sport as a conduit for health advocacy and community resilience.
