Sam Whelan, a former star quarterback from Soquel High, has secured a walk‑on position with the Cal Poly‑San Luis Obispo football program, joining the Mustangs for the upcoming season.
A Walk‑On Story of Perseverance
After a broken left fibula ended his senior year prematurely, Whelan spent months rehabbing before sending more than 20 highlight reels to offensive coordinators across the country. His persistence paid off when he earned a preferred walk‑on slot in early June, a designation that already appears on the 2026 roster.
The son of a statistics major, Whelan plans to study the subject at Cal Poly while sharpening his game on the field. He credits Stu Walters, the recently retired Knights Athletics Director, for helping open doors with the Cal Poly staff, and he hopes to contribute to a program that tied for eighth in the Big Sky Conference last year.
Whelan’s high school career was marked by record‑setting performances: 338 completions of 476 attempts for 5,051 yards and 57 touchdowns, plus 663 rushing yards and 17 scores. He led the Knights to their first Central Coast Section, NorCal and CIF state championships as a sophomore and earned MVP honors in the Gabilan Division as a junior and senior.
Beyond the numbers, coaches such as Dwight Lowery have praised Whelan’s football IQ, calling him one of the smartest players they’ve encountered. Alongside teammate Django Daillak, he recently received a National Football Foundation College Hall of Fame Scholarship, underscoring his blend of athletic and academic promise.
