Missouri girls flag football inches toward full sport status
Missouri’s girls flag football is transitioning from an emerging activity to a provisionally interscholastic sport after the association confirmed that enough schools have met the participation thresholds, including the requirement of 50 schools across three or more board districts.
If the provisional designation persists for a second straight year, the sport will return to the annual ballot, and a two‑thirds vote could elevate it to full interscholastic status, potentially unlocking a state championship as early as the 2027‑28 school year.
The 2025 ballot saw a 95.1% approval rate, underscoring broad support among member schools and signaling a strong momentum behind the sport’s expansion.
Rule changes set for July 1
Limited replay will be introduced in basketball to clarify whether a final‑period basket counts and whether it is worth two or three points, bringing the sport in line with national standards.
Team tennis will also be allowed to participate in preseason jamborees, a provision that was passed with a 95.1% vote, giving teams more flexibility in scheduling non‑conference matches.
A separate proposal revises coaching and activity‑director requirements, simplifying the initial certification process and establishing a five‑year continuing‑education track for those without a professional teaching certificate. The measure, which garnered 360 yes votes (over 90% of the total), is intended to broaden the pool of qualified coaches, especially in districts that struggle to attract educators with traditional credentials.
Andrew Kauffman, communications director for the Missouri State High School Activities Association, said the changes reflect a deliberate effort to make extracurricular opportunities more accessible across the state.
