A New Chapter for Kentucky Basketball
Mo Williams arrived at the University of Kentucky this offseason, swapping the head‑coaching bench at Jackson State for an assistant role on Mark Pope’s staff. The move comes after an eleven‑year NBA career that culminated in a 2016 championship with the Cleveland Cavaliers, giving him a blend of playing experience and coaching insight.
Williams is already talking about the upcoming 2026‑27 campaign with confidence, describing the Wildcats as ‘absolutely loaded’ and emphasizing the potential of a backcourt anchored by Zoom Diallo and Alex Wilkins. He praised Diallo’s physicality and downhill pressure, while noting Wilkins’s length and shiftiness on the perimeter.
The frontcourt remains a work in progress, especially after Malachi Moreno’s recent decision to enter the NBA Draft, leaving the roster’s interior still evolving. Nonetheless, Williams stressed that recruiting top talent will be central to turning the team’s promise into a championship contender.
Recruiting as a Foundation
Beyond the current roster, Williams highlighted that building a winning culture starts with attracting elite prospects. He said the staff is focused on identifying players who can complement the existing core and help the program chase a national title.
