A New Direction for German Football
The German soccer federation (DFB) confirmed on Tuesday that Andreas Rettig will not seek an extension of his contract when it expires at the end of 2026, marking the end of a brief but eventful tenure.
Rettig’s departure follows the sudden resignation of Julian Nagelsmann as Germany’s head coach, a move triggered by the team’s under‑whelming performance at the recent World Cup.
Having assumed office in September 2023, Rettig was tasked with overseeing every national side, from the men’s and women’s teams to the youth academies, and he previously served as managing director of the German league and as a DFB board member.
With the coaching vacancy now open, the federation has appointed Rudi Völler as sporting director of the men’s side and Bernd Neuendorf as its president, while publicly expressing a desire to lure Jürgen Klopp back to the helm.
The coming months will test whether the DFB can translate this ambition into a concrete appointment, as fans and analysts alike watch closely for the next chapter of German football.
