A Veteran Coach Joins the Revolutionaries
Joe Barrers has been appointed as an assistant coach for the George Washington University men’s basketball program, filling the vacancy left by Dwayne Lee, who recently moved to VCU.
Barrers arrives after more than twenty years of coaching across high schools, NCAA Division II and III institutions, and the NBA G League, bringing a deep reservoir of experience to the collegiate level.
His most recent role was head coach of the Birmingham Squadron, the New Orleans Pelicans’ G League affiliate, where he guided the team to a 16‑20 record in the 2025‑2026 season. Earlier, he led the Lakeland Magic to a championship‑winning campaign in 2021, having previously served as an assistant coach for the same club from 2017 to 2021.
Barrers also guided the Lakeland Magic to a 41‑55 overall record over two seasons after his promotion in 2021, and his tenure at George Mason University, where he worked alongside current head coach Chris Caputo, laid the groundwork for his return to the Washington, D.C. area.
Caputo praised Barrers’ unique skill set and extensive background, stating that his presence will significantly enrich the program and help the Revolutionaries build on recent successes.
University officials highlighted Barrers’ proven leadership and his ability to develop talent, noting that his appointment aligns with the program’s ambition to compete at the highest level of collegiate basketball.
