A Transformative Vision for Williamsport
A dedication ceremony on a bright summer morning drew city officials and community leaders to celebrate the inauguration of the Williamsport Lumber Yards baseball and softball complex. Mayor Derek Slaughter and City Council President Eric Beiter joined a lineup of speakers who highlighted the project’s potential to energize the local economy and provide a hub for athletic competition.
The $23 million development, first conceived a decade ago, faced numerous setbacks, including delays caused by the worldwide pandemic. After ten years of planning, construction, and community engagement, the site — once a trash dump and Brownfield — has been completely reclaimed and transformed into a state‑of‑the‑art sports venue.
The complex features seven well‑maintained fields designed for youth leagues and collegiate programs. It is slated to host thousands of athletes and their families, with projections indicating 13,000 participants will visit before the annual Little League World Series begins next month.
Funding and Partnerships
Financial backing for the initiative came from a diverse coalition of regional partners. Contributions from Geisinger Medical Center, UPMC, First Commonwealth Bank, EQT, Allison Crane & Rigging, and the Lycoming Economic Development Foundation helped bridge the funding gap. The Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce created Williamsport Ballpark Inc. in 2019 to hold the land and coordinate the project’s execution.
Pennsylvania College of Technology will call the facility home for its softball and baseball teams, adding a collegiate dimension to the venue’s schedule. Local businesses anticipate a surge in patronage as tournaments attract visitors from across the region, fostering growth in hospitality and retail sectors.
Looking Ahead
City officials envision the Lumber Yards as a catalyst for broader revitalization efforts, hoping the influx of athletes and spectators will stimulate ongoing investment in Williamsport’s infrastructure and community programs. The opening marks the beginning of a new chapter for local sports, education, and economic development.
